First Photos Released from the Set of Pablo Larrain’s 'Neruda'


Co-starring Gael García Bernal and Luis Gnecco, The Latest ‘Participant PanAmerica’ Project Reunites the Team Behind 'No'
 

ANTIAGO, CHILE & LOS ANGELES (July 23, 2015) – Participant Media is reteaming with No director Pablo Larrain and star Gael García Bernal for Neruda, the next film under the company’s Participant PanAmerica initiative. The film is currently shooting on location in Chile and, today, the production released the first still photographs from the set, available at:

Neruda stars Chile’s Luis Gnecco (HBO’s “Profugos”) in the title role, Garcia Bernal as police inspector Peluchonneau, charged with hunting down the dissident Nobel prize-winner, and Mercedes Moran (The Motorcycle Diaries) as Neruda’s wife, Delia del Carril,
 
With a screenplay by Chilean playwright Guillermo Calderon, (Sundance 2012 World Cinema Jury Prize winner Violeta Went to Heaven), Neruda is an international co-production of Chile’s Fabula, France’s Funny Balloons and Reborn Productions, Spain’s Setembro Cine, and Argentina’s AZ Films, co-financed by U.S.-based Participant Media, which also acquired North American rights. The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larrain, and executive produced by Participant’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King.
 
Neruda is being distributed in Chile by Twentieth Century Fox, and will premiere in the winter of 2016.
 
Launched in 2013, Participant PanAmerica is Participant’s initiative to develop and finance socially significant films for and from Latin America. The first Participant PanAmerica film, Ardor, also starring Garcia Bernal, premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and is now available on-demand in the U.S.
 
Neruda (Synopsis)
It's 1948 and the Cold War has made its way to Chile. In the Chilean Congress, Senator Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) criticizes the government and the President calls for his impeachment, delegating his arrest to Investigator Óscar Peluchonneau (Gael García Bernal).
 
A failed attempt to flee the country forces Neruda and his wife, painter Delia del Carril (Mercedes Moran), to shelter with the dissidents of the Chilean underground.
 
A clandestine Neruda pens the Canto General, a poetic history of the Americas, which transforms him into a literary legend and a symbol for liberty. European artists, led by Pablo Picasso, clamor for Neruda’s freedom, but Peluchonneau is determined to track him down for Chile’s right-wing President.
