In The Help, a group of women risk everything to tell their stories. Through the process of storytelling they become empowered and, in turn, inspire and empower others. In the spirit of these bold characters, The Help Social Action Campaign offered individuals the opportunity, both on and offline, to share their own stories of perseverance.
This summer, hundreds entered The Help Storytelling Challenge. We're pleased to present the winners below.
The Winner: Rebecca Lubin, of Mill Valley, CA, has been a nanny for nearly two decades. Her goat cheese lasagna was a tasty treat, but her heartwarming story left everyone in the TakePart kitchen teary-eyed. Get the recipe and read her full story.
The Winner: Darcy Pattison’s “11 Ways to Ruin a Photograph” is the story of a tenacious young girl who refuses to take a good photograph while her father is away “soldiering.” After being chosen by guest judge and children’s book author Lou Berger, we had her beautiful story professionally illustrated.

The Winner: Genoveva Islas-Hooker charmed guest judge Doc Hendley (founder of Wine to Water) with her story, A Heroine Named Confidential. A case manager for patients with HIV, Islas-Hooker was consistently inspired by one special individual who never gave up the fight to live.
She won a trip to New York City for a main stage performance of The Moth.
