The Kite Runner was based on one of the most acclaimed and bestselling books in recent memory. Although it presents an unforgettable portrait of two childhood friends growing up in the divided country of Afghanistan on the verge of war, the vast majority of those who actually read the book live outside of Afghanistan. The country’s literacy rate is the third lowest in the world; only 43% of men and 13% of women are able to read and write. While part of our Social Action Campaign was designed to improve tolerance and understanding in the United States, the main focus is to raise awareness and support for a host of literacy initiatives, including training teachers and building libraries in rural Afghanistan.
