A Monster Calls still from film

LOS ANGELES (December 1, 2016) A Monster Calls and Neruda each received Critics’ Choice Awards nominations. The awards are bestowed by the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA).

A Monster Calls received two nominations: Best Visual Effects and Lewis MacDougall for Best Young Actor/Actress.

A visually spectacular drama from acclaimed director Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Impossible”), A Monster Calls is based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel by Patrick Ness. 12-year-old Conor (MacDougall) attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss, and faith. The film opens in select theaters December 23, and everywhere January 6.

Oscar-nominated director Pablo Larrain's Neruda was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

It's 1948 and the Cold War has made its way to Chile. In the Chilean Congress, Senator Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) criticizes the government and the President calls for his impeachment, delegating his arrest to Investigator Óscar Peluchonneau ( Gael Garcia Bernal). A failed attempt to flee the country forces Neruda and his wife, painter Delia del Carril (Mercedes Moran), to shelter with the dissidents of the Chilean underground. The film opens on December 16.

The winners will be announced at the Critics’ Choice Awards gala in Santa Monica, Calif. on December 11. View the complete list of nominees here.
