“He Named Me Malala,” a documentary feature by Davis Guggenheim, tells the story of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot and grievously wounded by a Taliban gunman for her fervent advocacy of female education. Retells, you may be thinking; it’s a story that has put Malala’s face and name on TV screens and magazine covers all over the world, and made her the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate. But don’t assume that Mr. Guggenheim has settled for familiar hagiography. This is, in fact, a surprisingly bright-spirited and profoundly moving portrait of Malala and—a big and—the father who named her after a national folk hero of Afghanistan, guided her education in Pakistan’s Swat Valley and set her on her fateful path.
